Sprint Offers Compaq Mini 110c-1040DX Netbook for $1
Sprint Nextel is partnering with Best Buy to offer Compaq Mini 110c-1040DX for 99-cent. In order to obtain the netbook, customers have to sign up for 2 years with Sprint’s broadband or 3G plan, which typically runs at $60 per month. The netbook is also available without a contract for $389.99.
The deal means users can get a Compaq Mini netbook that comes with an embedded modem that uses Sprint’s EV-DO 3G network. The mini-notebook also has a built-in webcam, Intel’s Atom processor, a 10-inch screen, 160 GB of hard drive memory, Windows XP, and built-in Wi-Fi and digital media readers.
What is important to note is that the two-year activation agreement also comes with a usage limit of 5 GB a month. Users have to pay for any overages that occur.
The 99-cent offer is the latest twist in the busy market for netbooks. AT&T kicked off the game last year with a $100 device through RadioShack, and Verizon Wireless subsequently jumped in with a similar offer via its own retail outlets.
Considering the fact that competition on the market of netbooks is heating up, going forward other retail chains, operators and manufacturers are likely to offer similar bargains and “netbooks for $1″ will become a more widespread reality.
